Biography

Dr. M Rafiqul Islam received Ph.D. degree from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) in 2003, currently a Professor (Grade-1) in the Department of Agronomy. Dr. Islam has a strong background in teaching and research in agronomy, land & crop management, and climate change. He is a leading researcher at the BSMRAU in the fields, including NRM, eco-physiology, and environment, farming systems having skills in ecosystem management, remote sensing, and GIS in agriculture. The course taught include agroclimatology, irrigation and farm management at BS level, principles and practices of irrigation, soil management and crop production, agrometeorology, microclimate, climate change and crop production, Remote sensing and GIS in agrometeorology at MS/PhD level; Having working experience with research groups of South and Southeast Asia and promoting collaborative activities on geo-information system in monsoon Asia, formulating crop diversification strategies in the coastal Bangladesh, and APN led projects on coastal ecosystem and changing economic activities along Chinese and South Asian Coasts and linking monsoon dynamics to riverbank erosion and human response in South Asia, assessment of land availability trend for food security, experience in participatory research and development (PR&D) activities for South and Southeast Asia region; Extensive experience in data processing, statistical analysis, interpretation, giving advisory services to the farmers on: farm resource e.g. land, soil, water, fisheries, poultry and livestock utilization, conserving soil health, irrigation scheduling, He supervised over 45 MS and 6 Ph.D. students and published more than 80 research articles, including research papers, reviews, books and book chapters. Dr. Islam is a member of the Editorial Board of Bangladesh Journal of Agronomy and serves as an external peer reviewer of many reputed international journals. He has participated in different international projects, including APN (Japan), NSF (USA), FAO (Italy) PR & D (Philippines), DANIDA (Denmark), and attended many international and national conferences as an invited speaker.
